로버트 잉거솔(Robert Ingersoll, 1833 – 1899)은
19세기 미국의 유명한 정치가, 웅변가, 자유주의적 사상가였다.
그는 기독교에 대하여 회의적이었고
하나님에 대해서도 아주 부정적인 사람이었다.
*본래 그는 친구 루 윌리스(Lew Wallace 1827-1905)와 함께
예수도, 기독교도 모두 다 거짓임을 증명하는 글을 쓰려고 했던 사람이다.
그런데 그의 친구 월리스는 오히려 크게 회심하여
‘벤허'(Ben-Hur: A Tale of Christ) 라는 명작을 남겼다.
하지만 로버트 잉거솔은 허무하게 죽음을 맞이했다.
그의 장례식 날 순서지에는 이런 안내문이 적혀 있었다.
“노래는 부르지 않습니다.”(There will be no singing.)
죽음을 앞에 두고 노래하고 싶은 사람은 거의 없을 것이다.
달아나고 싶거나, 울고 싶은 사람은 있겠지만
죽음 앞에서 노래 부르고 싶은 사람은 아무도 없을 것이다.
죽음은 우리에게서 노래를 빼앗아간다.
노래 대신 침묵을 지키는 입술과
눈물로 얼룩진 뺨을 남겨 놓는다. (237)

When the famous agnostic Robert Ingersoll died,
the printed funeral program left this solemn instruction,
“There will be no singing.”
Few feel like singing in the face of death.
Running, perhaps. Crying, probably.
Bui singing? Not at death.
Death steals our reason to sing.

초대 교회 시절 기독교가
놀라울 정도로 크게 부흥 성장하는 모습을 보면서

아주 가까운 다른 곳으로 출발하는 것처럼 보이더라구!”
