임상 실험으로 증명 된 중보 기도의 능력
기도는 능력이 있습니다!
그러나 아무리 기도의 능력(Power of Prayer)을 부르짖어도
교인들까지도 좀처럼 믿으려고 하지 않습니다.
기도의 능력을 인정은 합니다.
그러나 기도의 능력을 진짜 믿는 사람은 그리 많지 않습니다.
더욱이 기도의 능력을 자신에게 구체적으로 나타나기를
간절히 사모하며 기도하는 사람은 참으로 적습니다.
아무리 성경에 근거하여 기도의 능력을 강조해 봐야
진지하게 믿는 사람은 별로 많지 않습니다.
왜냐하면 현대인들은 성경의 권위 보다
신문이나 잡지, 라디오 방송이나 T.V.의 권위를 더 신뢰하기 때문입니다.
목회자가 일러주는 성경 말씀 보다는
과학자나 의사들의 연구와 실험 결과를 더욱 더 중요하게 생각하지요.
세상 사람들의 마음이 이처럼 완악해 졌기에
뉴스에 보도 되었던 의사의 실험 결과를 중심으로
기도의 능력에 대하여 생각해 보고자 합니다.
CBS 방송국에서 보도 및 뉴스 해설을 담당하고 있는
챨스 오스굳(Charles Osgood)은 `Circulation’이라는 잡지 내용을 중심으로
다음과 같은 보도를 하였습니다.
쌘프란시스코 지역의 General Medical Center 라는 병원에서
랜돌프 버드(Randolf Byrd)라는 심장 전문의사가
중보 기도가 환자들의 건강회복에
어떤 영향을 미치고 있는지 실험해 보았습니다.
그는 400명의 환자들을 A 구룹과 B 구룹으로 나누었습니다.
A 구룹은 2 사람의 크리스챤이 그를 위해 중보기도를 해주는 환자 구룹이었고
B 구룹은 기도 후원이 전혀 없는 일반 환자들이 구룹이었습니다.
그 의사는 중보 기도를 하는 사람들에게
환자의 병명이나 건강상태에 대한 정보를 제공해 주었습니다.
그러나 그 밖의 개인 신상에 관한 정보는 일절 일러주지 않았습니다.
물론 환자들도 자신이 A 구룹에 속했는지 B 구룹에 속했는지
전혀 알지 못했습니다.
또한 자기를 위해 기도해 주는 사람이 누구인지도 전혀 몰랐습니다.
실험을 시작한지 6개월이 지났을 때
두 구룹 사이에는 다음과 같은 차이가 생겼습니다.
중보 기도의 후원이 전혀 없었던 B 구룹에서는
호흡이 곤란하거나 음식을 먹을 수 없기 때문에
튜브를 사용해야 하는 경우가 무려 12번이나 있었습니다.
그러나 A 구룹에서는 전혀 없었다는 것입니다.
또한 항생제(Antibiotics) 사용이
B 구룹은 16회, A 구룹은 3회로서 무려 5배 이상의 차이가 있었습니다.
심장이나 호흡기에 물이 고이는 증상들(pulmonary edema)은
B 구룹이 18회, A 구룹이 6회로서 3배 차이가 있었습니다.
뿐만 아니라 심장마비(cardiac arrest)나 폐렴(pneumonia)
또는 각종 심장 계통의 질환(congestive heart failure)이
B 구룹은 A 구룹 보다 훨씬 많았고
반대로 A 구룹은 B 구룹 보다 훨씬 적다는 놀라운 결과를 얻게 되었습니다.

기도는 이처럼 능력이 있습니다!
이러한 기도의 능력은 예수님의 생애 속에서 가장 완전하게 나타났습니다.
각종 질병으로 고통당하는 자들을 고치시고
더럽고 사악한 귀신을 내어 쫓으셨으며
바람과 바다까지 잔잔케 하셨고
죽은 나사로까지 살리시며 하나님의 능력을 나타내셨던 예수님은
기도의 능력이 얼마나 위대한 것인지 구체적으로 보여 주고 있습니다.
또한 사도들과 초대 교회 성도들도
전적으로 기도에 힘써 영적 능력과 권능을 받음으로서
여러 가지 `기사(奇事)와 표적(表蹟)'(wonders and signs)을 나타내며
예수 그리스도의 복음을 담대하게 전파하였습니다(행2:43).
뿐만 아니라 한국교회의 초창기에도
성도들의 뜨겁고 간절한 기도로 수 많은 기적과 능력이 나타났고
그 결과 오늘 날과 같은 세계적인 부흥과 발전을 이룩하게 된 것입니다.
기도는 하나님의 위대한 능력을 가져오는 비밀스런 `통로’입니다!
예수님은 분명히 말씀하셨습니다.
“너희가 기도할 때에 무엇이든지 믿고 구하는 것은 다 받으리라!”(마21:22)
“너희가 내 이름으로 무엇을 구하든지 내가 시행하리라!”(요14:13)
“너희가 내 안에 거하고 내 말이 너희 안에 거하면
무엇이든지 원하는 대로 구하라! 그리하면 이루리라!”(요15:7)
기도는 반드시 능력이 있습니다.
능력 있는 기도(Prayer of Power)로서
기도의 능력(Power of Prayer)을 체험하며 살아가는
성도다운 성도가 되도록 우리 모두 기도에 힘씁시다!
Prayer power. Most Christians could tell of experiences in which they prayed and God answered, often miraculously. Such experiences are proof to them of the power of prayer. But that is not the kind of evidence a scientist would need to prove prayers are answered and have any impact on circumstances or a person’s life. Scientific minds demand controlled experiments, facts, figures, and the like to satisfy their strict set of standards for proof. “But,” you may ask, “how on earth would you ever be able to set up such a scientific experiment for prayer? Is it even possible?”
Charles Osgood, veteran CBS reporter and commentator, relates a fascinating story of just such an experiment which was published in “Circulation”. A few years ago Dr. Randolph Byrd, a heart doctor in San Francisco General Medical Center’s Coronary Care Unit became curious about the effect of intercessory prayer on patients. He devised a scientifically controlled experiment to see if he could document the effect of prayer on patients. Nearly four hundred patients agreed to participate in a ten-month, double-blind experiment. He divided them into two control groups. The article states, “On entry into the study there was no statistical difference between the groups on any of thirty-four variables. In order to avoid any psychological factors, no one knew whether he was in the “A” group (those being prayed for) or if he was in the “B” group (those in the unsprayed for control group).
Pray-ers from across the United States had earlier been contacted and agreed to pray for a person in Group A. The doctor then assigned each to two pray-ers located in different parts of the states. Pray-ers were given only information on the persons’ medical problem, not their name.
After six months of prayer, results were tabulated. Virtually all comparisons were to the advantage of Group A or at least equal to Group B. The following chart shows some of the more significant comparisons between the two groups.

The conclusion drawn by those analyzing the materials was “IP (intercessory prayer) appears to have a beneficial effect in pts (patients) in a CCU (Coronary Care Unit).” Charles Osgood put it this way: “As we used to say about chicken soup: ‘it couldn’t hurt.’”
