그는 11살 때부터 바다에서 일했다.
지중해에 있는 한 영국 배의 선장이었던 아버지 덕분에
그는 어려서부터 훌륭한 왕실 해군이 되는 훈련을 받았다.
그러나 경험만 익혔을 뿐이지
규율을 지키는 훈련은 전혀 되어 있지 않았다.
그는 권위에 반항했으며, 못된 군중들을 선동했다.
그리고 해서는 안 되는 범죄 행위를 멋대로 저질렀다.
그가 받은 훈련은 군인으로 복무하는 데 조금 손색이 없었지만,
못된 행실 때문에 그는 자주 매를 맞거나 강등 당했다.
그는 20대 초반에 아프리카로 갔는데,
거기서 수지 맞는 노예 무역에 가담하게 되었고,
21살의 나이에 대서양을 횡단하는 노예선
그레이하운드 호의 소유주가 되었다.
존은 도덕을 비웃고 종교를 조롱했다.
심지어 그의 생을 마침내 바꿀
“그리스도를 본받아” 라는 책을 가지고 농담까지 했다.
사실 그는 자신의 배가 성난 폭풍에 휘말리기
몇 시간 전까지만 해도 그 책을 우습게 보았다.
그날 밤 그레이하운드 호는 엄청난 파도를 맞았다.
존이 잠을 깨어보니 선실에 물이 가득 차 있었다.
배의 한쪽 옆구리가 파손되었다.
배가 가라앉는 것은 이제 시간 문제였다.
그러나 그 배는 물에 잘 뜨는 화물을 싣고 있었기 때문에
쉽게 가라앉지 않았다.
존은 밤새도록 펌프로 물을 퍼냈다.
9시간 동안 그는 선원들과 함께 배가 가라앉지 않도록
모든 수단을 동원했다.
그러나 가망이 없었다.
마침내 그의 희망이 배보다 더 부서졌을 때,
그는 소금물에 젖은 갑판 위에 몸을 던지며 이렇게 호소했다.
“더 이상 우리 힘으로 어쩔 수 없구나.
주여, 우리 모두에게 자비를 베푸소서.”
자비를 받을 가치가 없었음에도 불구하고 그에게 자비가 임했고,
그레이하운드 호와 모든 탑승원들은 살아남을 수 있었다.
존은 폭풍이 몰아치는 대서양 한가운데 그날 밤에 나타난
하나님의 자비를 결코 잊을 수 없었다.
그는 영국으로 돌아가 많은 찬송시를 지었다.
우리가 부르는 찬송가 가운데
그가 지은 이런 것도 있다.
“나 같은 죄인 살리신 주 은혜 놀라워….”(405장)
노예를 잡아 팔다가 하나님을 알게 되어
찬송가를 작사하게 된 이 사람은 바로 죤 뉴톤이다.
그는 찬송가 작사가 뿐만 아니라 능력 있는 설교자가 되었다.
거의 50년 동안 그는 폭풍 속에서 당신과 나를 만나주실 수 있는
구원자의 이야기를 사람들에게 전했다.
그가 죽기 한두 해 전에,
사람들은 아주 좋지 않은 그의 시력을 염려해
그에게 설교를 그만두라고 충고했다.
그러자 그는 이렇게 소리쳤다.
“무슨 소리! 아직 말을 할 수 있는데 설교를 그만 두라니!”
그는 설교를 그만두지 않았다.
그만둘 수 없었다.
두려움의 기도로 시작했던 것이
믿음의 일생이라는 결과를 가져온 것이다.
그의 생애 말년에 누군가가 그의 건강에 관해 물었다.
그는 자신의 힘이 쇠약해지고 있다는 것을 고백했다.
“내 기억력은 거의 사라졌어.” 그가 말했다.
“그렇지만 두 가지 사실 만은 기억하고 있지.
나는 큰 죄인이며,
예수님은 크신 구원자라는 사실이야.”
이것 말고 우리가 더 기억해야 할 사실이 또 뭐가 있을까?

He had served on the seas since he was eleven years old.
His father, an English shipmaster in the Mediterranean, took him aboard
and trained him well for a life in the Royal Navy.
Yet what John gained in experience, he lacked in discipline.
He mocked authority.
Ran with the wrong crowd.
Indulged in the sinful ways of a sailor.
Although his training would have qualified him to serve as an officer,
his behavior caused him to be flogged and demoted.
In his early twenties, he made his way to Africa,
where he became intrigued with the lucrative slave trade.
At age twenty-one, he made his living on the Greyhound,
a slave ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
John ridiculed the moral and poked fun at the religious.
He even made jokes about a book that would eventually help reshape his life:
The Imitation of Christ.
In fact, he was degrading that book a few hours
before his ship sailed into an angry storm.
That night the waves pummeled the Greyhound,
spinning the ship one minute on the top of a wave.
Plunging her the next into a watery valley.
John awakened to find his cabin filled with water.
A side of the Greyhound had collapsed.
Ordinarily such damage would have sent a ship
to the bottom in a matter of minutes.
The Greyhound, however, was carrying buoyant cargo and remained afloat.
John worked at the pumps all night.
For nine hours, he and the other sailors struggled to keep the ship from sinking.
But he knew that it was a losing cause.
Finally, when his hopes were more battered than the vessel,
he threw himself on the saltwater-soaked deck and pleaded,
“If this will not do, then Lord have mercy on us all.”
John didn’t deserve mercy, but he received it.
The Greyhound and her crew survived.
John never forgot God’s mercy
shown on that tempestuous day in the roaring Atlantic.
He returned to England where he became a prolific composer.
You’ve sung his songs, like this one:
Amazing grace! how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.’
This slave-trader-turned-songwriter was John Newton.
Along with his hymn writing, he also became a powerful pulpiteer.
For nearly fifty years, he filled pulpits
and churches with the story of the Savior who meets you and me in the storm.
A year or two before his death,
people urged him to give up preaching because of his failing sight.
“What!” he explained.
“Shall the old African blasphemer stop while he can yet speak?”
He wouldn’t stop. He couldn’t stop.
What had begun as a prayer of fear resulted in a lifetime of faith.
During his last years, someone asked him about his health.
He confessed that his powers were failing.
“My memory is almost gone,” he said,
“but I remember two things:
I am a great sinner,
and Jesus is a great Savior.”
What more do you and I need to remember?
