On the Road to Emmaus(Luke24:13-33)

Luke 24 On the Road to Emmaus
13 Now thatt same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him…
…30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. (Luke 24:13-16, 30-33)

Two of Jesus’ 70 disciples were going out of Jerusalem, carrying heavy hearts full of disappointment and sorrow. They were in deep grieving over the death of Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and the people in their understanding. They expected Him to redeem Israel but He was arrested and crucified without performing His power. Why didn’t they recognize Jesus when He came to walk along with them, and joined in their conversation about Jesus? Why? Was it because they were too focused on their own grief and disappointment over Jesus’ death? Or because the crucifixion, a criminal’s execution, was big discrepancy from who He was? Or did they think that because Jesus was already dead, and must be lying in the tomb as a dead body, He was no longer a part of their lives, and they were off to start their new lives away from Jerusalem?
Have we ever been disappointed and very sad like those disciples, because Jesus seemed to be different from what we have known and learned from the Bible and church? Or because He doesn’t do something that we have requested, and expected Him to do for us? Why don’t we invite Him to our table and eat His given bread, and listen to His Scriptures so that our eyes are opened to see Him and get to know Him, raised from His tomb? Then our hearts will be burning with True Son of God by the Holy Spirit!  Shalom, Insook Do
